Texans Hype: Our Sad Gullibility, As Told By Five Cover Illustrations

The owners of NFL teams have been proven right: The Texans are oh-so-close to winning. Which is just another way of saying the Texans are chronic losers, we guess.

The 2010 season has been a bitter disappointment for fans, and it's difficult to see the team winning support back without drastic changes.

Who are we kidding? With or without drastic changes, the fans will be ready to jump on the bandwagon as next year begins. We know. We've been guilty of it.

Let's look at five of our Texans preview covers through the years.

2005: We first buy in Face it, nobody expected the Texans to do much their first three seasons. They were an expansion team, with growth pains to be expected. The fourth year, though, was going to be the end of the beginning. Playoffs? Why not?

2006: The Genius Arrives Okay, so maybe the Dom Capers Experiment went awry. Mistakes were made. But now the team had Gary Kubiak as head coach, and he single-handedly won 47 Super Bowls for the Denver Broncos as backup QB and offensive coordinator, so let the playoff run begin!

2008: Okay, Now The Genius Can Work His Magic
Supertankers don't turn on a dime, and neither do Dom Capers-coached teams. Gary Kubiak might have taken a little longer than hoped to get everything in place, but he made steady progress and by the 2008 season everything was in place for that elusive post-season game

2009: No More Bull, Redux Hey,wise guy, you try to keep coming up with catchy headlines intended to convey the thought that yeah, the Texans have disappointed in the past, but this year is the year for them to really step up. So we went with the "No More Bull" line again. Turns out there was still bull to be had.

2010: Our Year (For Suffering)
Space limitations prevented us from putting the entire headline on this year's cover. We apologize if the ensuing version gave the impression that after a lot of heartbreak, this year was going to be the season the Texans broke through.

2011: Predicted Headline
"Thank God for the Lockout"
