Nancy Shank: Her son remains in jail
Nancy Shank, the River Oaks- area mom who was stabbed to death by her mentally disturbed son, is being buried today; the funeral service is at St. John the Divine on River Oaks Boulevard.

While it's going on, her 20-year-old son will remain in a Harris County jail cell, under suicide watch in the jail's mental health ward.

Police say he stabbed his mother to death December 8, in the latest of a series of incidents.

His attorney is Dan Cogdell. Cogdell has never been shy about speaking with the media, but he's remaining quiet for now.

Outside the courtroom after John Shank's arraignment Friday, Cogdell said this to reporters: "Because of the nature of what happened, I'm going to be succinct. We intend to try this case in the courtroom and not to the media. The family is going through a horrific tragedy, and we simply ask for the continued prayers and support of their friends and their family."

He hasn't returned phone calls on the case.

John Shank is next scheduled to appear in court in January, when he is expected to enter a plea.

Meanwhile Nancy Shank's friends, and the friends of her prominent lawyer husband Daniel, are still reeling. Media reports say she had often asked friends to pray for her son.
