County Officials: Vote-Counting May Be Slow; Majority Of Votes Already Cast

Perhaps 60 percent of the Harris County vote has already been cast
Harris County clerk Beverly Kaufman's office is warning that it might take a little longer than usual to count the vote tomorrow, because of the fire that wiped out the county's electronic-voting machines.

The speed of the vote count may be slow "due to extra administrative procedures presiding election judges have to perform related to the possible use of paper ballots and because there will be only one central drop off location." the county says.

"The pace of the election returns will be dictated by how fast election judges complete their paper work and close down their polling location, and the sites' proximity to the central drop-off station", Kaufman  said. Officials also estimate that 60 percent of the Harris County vote has been cast already, during early voting. Almost 445,000 votes were cast early.

Officials expect to have the early-vote and mail-in results released shortly after polls close at 7 p.m., but the rest of the count may take a while.
