Terry Collins: Former Astros Manager Might Be Back From The Dead
It's been more than 10 years since former Astros manager Terry Collins has headed up a team, but rumors are building that he may be getting a new gig, on a big stage.
Terry Collins: Not really missed here in Houston
ESPN reports that Collins is a favorite to fill the New York Mets' coaching vacancy.
Collins, currently the organization's minor league field coordinator, has strong supporters in chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon and newly hired VP for player development and amateur scouting Paul DePodesta, who once was prepared to hire Collins as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers before being pushed out as GM there.
Collins isn't exactly remembered fondly here in Houston.
He was brought in to replace the laid-back Art Howe, who didn't scream at umpires enough for ownership, in 1993.
The Astros were in the middle of a streak of alternating hard-nosed, in-your-face managers with more easy-going types. Collins was here for three seasons, never reached the playoffs, and pissed off the clubhouse with his style.
As an antidote, the team brought in Larry Dierker, who immediately had success with Collins' players.
Howe eventually wound up in New York for two dismal years. We're not sure why the Mets expect anything more from this latest Houston castoff, but maybe things will work out this time.
