Runner-Up Turkey Of The Year: Rick Perry

Rick Perry: One race he couldn't win
It's just one day from the 2010 Turkeys of the Year issue, where we honor what is best in Turkeydom for the past year. This will be our eighth edition of the awards, and as always competition is stiff. Building up to the grand announcement of the winners, we'll take a look at some folks who -- despite their best efforts -- came close but didn't make the cut.

Category: Political Turkey, Turkey of the Year

Close but no cigar: Rick Perry

Why he could have been a turkey: Let's face it, Rick Perry made a strong case for himself. Holding out the state as a beacon of fiscal responsibility while facing a $20 billion budget deficit, escaping debates where he would have been demolished by demanding Bill White all but produce grocery receipts from college before he would face him, embracing Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh and -- as a topper -- demonstrating how much he loved America by implying Texas would secede from it.

That's one strong case, and we're sure Perry could all but taste the joy in becoming the first-ever back-to-back Turkey of the Year winner. If he couldn't do that, we're sure he was supremely confident in winning at least a Political Turkey of the Year honor.

Why he did not get named a Turkey: In 1993, the San Francisco Giants won 103 regular-season games and didn't make the playoffs. That's kind of how it was with Perry this year.

Any other year, he's a lock. This year, he was shut out.

We can only earnestly hope he runs for the White House in 2012. We deserve that much entertainment in our lives.

The Turkeys of the Year issue officially comes out Thursday, but it'll be up on the web tomorrow, so be sure to check for it.
