• FedUp, it does indeed have a lot of similarities to the Drug War. The Drug War is an ridiculously expensive, cruelly implemented and racially biased madness that causes more damage than it prevents, as well.

• Alas the states that turned their head to this issue for so many years finally are fed up with what it has become. Why did it take so long? Hummm, because the labor was cheap. Now that the Census shows how rapidly the problem will forever change the face of these states they are in a panic. Nevermind the crazy law that makes you an instant citizen by just dropping out of your illegal mother on our soil. This immigration problem could have been stopped a long time ago....by throwing the book at anyone that employed these people. But the powers that be made a good living off the low wage labor. THAT DEAR PEOPLE IS AND WAS THE PROBLEM! Has a lot of similarity to the Drug War...we keep buying.

• If it was good enough for me to wait two years for a green card it is good enough for everyone else. Obey the laws of the land, do it right or just go back to your country and demand that they give you free health care, education and anything else you may not want to pay for. The one thing that does bother me is, that why is our lawmakers now just starting to wake up and see what has been going on for so long. These steps should have been taken oh so long ago. Now, we are where we are. How many illegals are now here in Texas, not to mention the remaining 49 states? I have stood in line at Walmart and saw these people paying for milk, bread, etc. with the "Lone Star" card. Then pull out green to pay for beer. Now what is wrong with that picture??? • The public school issue was already addressed by the Supreme Court in Plyler v. Doe, 457 U.S. 202. To quote the Wikipedia summary: "A Texas statute denying free public education to undocumented alien children violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, because discrimination on the basis of immigration status did not further a substantial state interest. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed" How much of taxpayer funds is the state going to waste re-litigating this if the bill passes?

• Representative Riddle is either a bald-faced liar, or a slack-jawed moron. The procedure that is currently in place is such that, if someone is arrested for a crime and their immigration status is unclear, law enforcement then determines that at booking. If it turns out that they are an illegal immigrant, they are turned over to INS. What sort of "new tool" does she think she's adding to law enforcement?

• Molly Ivins was brilliant and hilarious, and she warned Texans and later, Americans, what a miserable failure George W. Bush was, and turned out, in fact, to be. Failure though he was at most everything, W at least understood that immigration policy needed to be fixed, and made more humane, and that our economy, especially Texas's economy profits from undocumented workers.
