Scores Of "Unsightly" Billboards Will Be Torn Down, Parker Says

A victory for billboard-haters
Mayor Annise Parker says 59 highway billboards on the fringes of Houston's city limits will be taken down under a court order from a long-running lawsuit.

The signs -- owned by RTM Media --  are in the city's "extra-territorial jurisdiction" and therefore are subject to ordinances banning them, the court ruled.

"This company thumbed its nose at that prohibition and targeted the neighborhoods just outside our city limits," said Parker. "This is another major victory in the long-running battle to reduce visual blight. Sign control, an attractive urban streetscape and green space equal a formula designed not only to insure the quality of life for Houstonians but a recipe for economic success." The sings will be taken down over the next year, with the city paying none of the cost of up to $15,000 per billboard to do so, the mayor's office said.

Parker will officially announce the decision at the Scenic Houston Annual Visionary Dinner tonight.
