• There is nothing wrong with raw milk. We would be better off if pasterization was only used in few instances. Milk retain greater nutrional value, and farming would have remained a reasonable means to make a living. Yes, milk would be a little more expensive, but we as a culture would not be so far removed from our food sournes, that would not allow for our environment to be poisoned or over developed. Rural and farm land values would remain higher. Heck, this would have helped maintain the Jeffersonian ideals that the Libertarians and some conservatives used to crow about.

• It's not just milk, it's also apple cider, carrot juice, etc. For those of you who've never tasted non-pasteurized apple or carrot juice, you have no idea how the pasteurization process changes the flavor. The juice is cooked, and the flavor changes from raw to cooked. You all know what a raw vs. cooked carrot or apple tastes like. You can't buy it raw any longer due to a few people with compromised immune systems, in a nation of over 300 million individuals, contracting e-coli. I think not. In a libertarian discourse, I find it odd that milk producers have sought government intervention to prevent labeling of milk as "growth hormone free." To answer your final question, our predecessors lived in an agrarian society. The transition away from that necessitated pasteurization. It's a bit impractical to keep a cow in my backyard. • Ecoli, salmonella, listeria etc. are diseases spread by the unsanitary conditions that exist at CORPORATE MEGA-FARMS, where they find it more efficient to maintain animals with antibiotics, than to clean up the manure! Vegetables now become infected with these bacteria because rain water washes it from the standing manure into nearby irrigation systems which often include a large man-made pond for storing rain water. Here it further multiplies and is subsequently applied to plants. Smaller, traditional farms can keep the grounds & animals clean and healthy! Use common sense: If dysentery and bloody diarrhea were the norm with raw milk, there would be no market for it. Instead it's popularity is increasing and it sells at premium prices! As long as the product is labeled, no one should be complaining or dictating it's prohibition. Frightened of raw milk? Don't buy it!

In any sort of libertarian discourse, any action by the State in terms of regulation is always a "bad thing". His point was that the "Big Ag" companies are so intent on mass producing products (such as milk) that they must pasteurize because of the unhealthy way they use milking cows. In this process, the bad bacteria is taken away but so is the good bacteria that has several health benefits for humans. Secondly, he does address which one would be safer though not necessarily in a clear fashion. When massive amounts of dairy cows live in a tight space--as is the case with large corporate dairy farms--they must feed the cattle antibiotics frequently to curb any sort of sickness that could spread through the herd. These large farming companies would not be able to compete with the smaller guys if the majority of milk consumers preferred raw milk over the homogenized, pasteurized version since their [the large farms] milk would be full of antibiotics, growth hormones and nastiness from having their cows sitting in its own poo all day. If you want to get into the discussion of cost effectiveness of which method is better (large corporate farms versus small family farms), then that is a discussion for someone much more familiar than I am with agriculture and economics. Honestly though, I really have nothing against producing milk either way. What I have a problem with is the State favoring one company over the other. If raw milk was so dangerous, then how did our predecessors survive before pasteurization?

• Richard, You show nutritional and microbial ignorance in your defense of the nanny-state, rather than the freedom of Americans to drink raw milk should they choose to do so. Whether some feel it is a spiritual experience to do so (easy prey for laughter), the fact remains that pasteurization, while admittedly killing germs, takes the good bacteria along with it, much like the indiscriminate killing that occurs in your intestines during a round of antibiotics. Microflora are essential for making available the nutrition that is naturally present in milk, from whatever species. In defense of the nanny state, would you propose pasteurizing human breast milk, to eradicate the bacteria there, too? The real problem lies in large factory farming, where animals are often raised in such a sickly fashion, that microbial imbalance and infection is a way of "life" and antibiotics are practically regarded as lifesaving nutrition. I have never read you before, so I do not know if you dislike Ron Paul for his defense of individual liberty or for other reasons, but if you want to drink pasteurized milk, knock yourself out. Just don't use the nanny/police state to force everyone to live by your arrogant belief that you (or government regulators) know better that those who choose to eat (or worship) differently than you.
