Clifton Middle School -- We Don't Need No Stinkin' Textbooks!

A friend of Hair Balls contacted us the other day to say that there were no lockers and no textbooks for students at Clifton so far this school year.
This was confirmed in part by HISD Spokesman Norm Uhl who said yes, because of ongoing renovations at the school there aren't any lockers available to the students. He said all parents were notified of this before the school year began.
As for the textbooks, that's a yes and a no and a maybe (if you have a computer).
Yes, there are textbooks -- but only a set for each class, so no, there's no take-home copies. HISD spokeswoman Sarah Greer Osborne said that instead students are taking home worksheets to do their assignments.
"Textbooks are meant to be used as a supplement to the tools and resources teachers use," Greer Osborne said.
Under the maybe category: "Parents can come get a CD copy of the textbooks," she added, explaining that they can keep the CD for up to two weeks to download it. "All the school's science textbooks are available online," she said.
Asked if all the parents at this school in northwest Houston had access to a computer, Greer Osborne said she didn't know, but retrieved statistical information for us showing that in 2009-10 the school had an enrollment of 1,044 of whom 79.4 percent were on free or reduced price lunch and 49.4 percent were deemed at risk.
All in all, it's just another brick in the wall.
