Denene Miller's Hotlanta: Banned in Cy-Fair
Banned Books Week begins Saturday, and the ACLU of Texas has put out its annual report on censorship in the state's schools.

One highlight: "[W]e were pleased to see that Houston ISD, the largest school district in the state and the one with the most challenges just two years ago, reportedly had no incidents of books being challenged or removed in 2010."

We are so enlightened in this town, it is unbelievable. Or maybe the Tea Party people had other things to occupy them this year.

Other area districts showed up on the ACLU's banned-books list, though:

Alvin ISD banned or limited two books: More Horowitz Horror by Anthony Horowitz, (Alvin Elementary), The Creature from the Depths by Mark Kidwell (Stevenson Primary)

And Cy-Fair ISD banned one: Hotlanta by Denene Miller (Kahla Middle School).

Compared to districts like Round Rock and Corpus Christi, it seems like it was a pretty quiet year around here.

Overall, the number of banned books continued to drop, from 46 in 2006-07 to 20 in 2009-10.

"The good news is: when it comes to the outright banning of books, this year was better than last year. We have seen a slight but steady decrease in both the number of books challenged and banned since the 2007-2008 school year," the study said. "The bad news is: of those challenges brought before school administrators this year, 44 percent led to a book being banned or restricted."
