• "and it's Manchester United (or United), not Man U" Do you Yanks know the reason for this? If not allow me to explain (some of our own fans could do with knowing this aswell). "Man U" is one of the most offensive and disrespectful nicknames ever given to a club. The origin of the term "Man U" is a song to insult the deceased Duncan Edwards. The Leeds fans (not to knock on any Leeds fans out there, but this is fact) created their own version of the song to insult all the men that died in the Munich air disaster of 1958. Rival supporters have since adopted this term for the same use: To insult the men who died in Munich. The song went something like this: "Man U, Man U, went on a plane! Man U, Man U, never came back again!" "Man U, never intended coming home!" So by calling us that you are i fact isultig the dead.

Football (American), I'll agree. Doesn't get much tougher than that. People talk about rugby players not wearing pads - but they're also going in the same direction. I played baseball and soccer throughout my youth. I've played baseball (NOT softball) and soccer as an adult. I prefer baseball in a number of ways, but when it comes to sheer athleticism required and level of injury risk, baseball doesn't compare to soccer. Of course, those are the opinions of someone who actually plays sports. Too bad spilling gravy on yourself and developing arterial plaque aren't sports, otherwise we could be athletes together.

• I read the article which has spawned all the controversey. It's obvious the people writing in and railing against the piece have missed the point that it's light hearted. That being said I'm a Texan living in the UK and while I'm not from Houston (Ft.Worth originally) I would like to say that I've been to Manchester and it's a F'cking shit hole. So, while they may be proud of their team playing that dainty ass sport, they cannot be proud of their city. One side looks like a GD taliban training camp and the city centre is a vagrant filled cesspool. My wife couldn't get over how scummy and dangerous it seemed and she's from Belfast! So, to our limey friends from a less consequential nation please just sit back and relish the fact that your blessed team is in a real city, in a real state, in a real country. Tata!
