Woman Wins Million-Plus In Texas Lottery For Fourth Time

We're not the biggest lottery fans in the world (tax on the mathematically illiterate and all that), but if we had Joan Ginther's luck maybe we'd change our mind.

Last week Ginther traveled to Austin to pick up $10 million she won from some super extreme amazing give-us-your-money scratch-off ticket.

Which isn't unusual -- someone has to win, after all -- but it was the fourth time Ginther has won over a million dollars in the Texas Lottery.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports that Ginther, a native of Bishop now living in (of course) Las Vegas, keeps racking up the wins.

It began in 1993 with a $5.4 million win in the regular ol' Lotto. Thirteen years later, on a trip back home to care for her father, she won $2 million on a $30 scratch-off ticket. (Thirty bucks for a scratch-off ticket? The mind reels, unless your name is Joan Ginther.) Two years after that, in 2008, she won a $3 million scratch-off prize.

When you take into account the lump-sum and annuity stuff, she's won about $20.4 million in the "contests."

Two of the tickets were purchased at the same convenience store, which got a $10,000 check each time.

Lottery officials told the Caller-Times they don't keep track of multiple winners. We assume they check the winning tickets pretty closely.

Ginther requested "minimum publicity" and could not be reached, the paper said. She was probably busy plotting how best to further deprive fellow scratch-off players from the jackpot.

Some of the criticism toward annuities comes from professional asset managers who earn their commissions as a percentage of the total money they manage and keep at risk for growth. Too often, seniors are talked into placing their money into vehicles that could instantly reduce their life savings. There is a big difference between the professional investor who wants to aggressively grow a $1 million-dollar portfolio and the retiree with $150,000 who likely needs every dollar to get through retirement without outliving savings. The latter may achieve their retirement goals just fine working with a licensed insurance agent or advisor who is not necessarily an RIA.

I think she's a greedy b***h tell you the truth. She should of stopped after the 1st time she won. Greedy people. There is people struggling there asses off to make ends meet. Good hard working people that is fighting a losing battle with this economy, job losses, etc. Then you got this greedy b***h still playing the lotto after shes won millions. Absolutely shamefull b***h.

Wow. You people are crazy. You seriously think a lottery would give away millions for publicity? Do you not understand how it really works? They tell everyone when there wasn't a winner because that increases the amount and drives sales. But this lady won on a scratch-off ticket. There has to be a winner (you can look up the odds) for each prize amount. Regulated businesses like this are always bad mouthed by small minded losers.
It's astrology, folks. Also, if you're a compulsive gambler, you don't stop just because you struck it rich.
I agree with Larry about the odds. There is probably occasionally an unclaimed winning ticket to a lottery. Someone with this inside knowledge notifies the woman. The woman is able to obtain a fake ticket with the winning number. The money is split up among the conspirators.
I know this is going to sound like "sour grapes," but it is not. It is a belief that I have and hold to be realistic. This woman is, to my mind, a front. There is no way in hell that I am going to accept that this woman has won this much money four different times. The fact that it has occurred in the home state of George W. Bush, as well as, what passes for a "rational' governor for that state alone makes me suspicious. Col. Oliver North was willing to sell out his honour as an officer and marine for a "slush fund" of a mere four million in the Iran-Contra-Reagan scandal. North was a front. This lady is a front. I can only guess at the reasons.

Wow, I think that's great! I would say she's a very "fortunate" person to have won the lottery so many times. To have won four times is unfathomable. I never play the lotto or even a puchase a scratch off as I can not bear the thought of giving away money with the possibility of not getting something in return. I at least get a thank you from the homeless man at the corner each time I give him a dollar. But to have purchased a $30 scratch off with odds of winning nothing is beyond my comprehension. Perhaps thats why I've never won the lottery. I guess I should start playing as I am certainly inspired. Although I don�t think I will ever have the resolve to spend $30 bucks on a scratch off ticket.
