Pop Rocks: The Time Is Now For A Friends Movie
It's been a dark six years since we said goodbye to Central Perk and the Rembrandts dropped off the face of the earth. Now, in Year 6 AF, dawn looks like it's finally breaking; we could be getting a Friends movie.
Now, I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. Will a film catching up with Monica, Joey, Rachel...and the other ones solve the horrible problems that have plagued us since the show's end? Will our economy instantly rebound, creating 15 million jobs? Will the BP oil spill miraculously close itself? Will Osama bin Laden emerge, weeping, from a cave in the tribal regions of Pakistan, to express his love for Lisa Kudrow?
In a word, yes.
First though, we need to hear how likely this potentially miraculous event is:
Courteney Cox, who played Monica Geller on 'Friends', says she would like the popular sitcom to make the transition to the big screen just like 'Sex and The City' did. She admits it may be a challenge since the setting for the 'Friends' TV show was usually limited to the coffee shop and an apartment.
In an interview with the LA Times, Cox reveals that her former co-star Jennifer Aniston has a "great idea" on how to reunite the characters of 'Friends' for a big screen storyline.
But, Cox has her doubts about the project ever coming together: "A lot of things would have to break just right for it to work. But we've daydreamed about it."
Yes, a "lot of things." For as we're all probably aware, the Friends cast has been really, really busy these last few years. Let's take a look and see if there's any possibility these guys might be able to get free for what promises to be a grueling shoot in and around central Manhattan.
Courteney Cox-Arquette -- "Monica"
Post-Friends Career Highlight: A 3-episode run on Scrubs; Cougar Town, if you want to stretch the definition of "highlight."
Post-Friends Career Lowlight: Her uncredited role as Adam Sandler's bitchy girlfriend in The Longest Yard remake.
Participation Prognosis: She's probably one of the few cast members who doesn't really need a movie to happen. After all, between her and husband David Arquette, they've managed to put together something approximating an actual career.
Matthew Perry -- "Chandler"
Post-Friends Career Highlight: A fairly successful turn as Matt Albie on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.
Post-Friends Career Lowlight: Admitting on Twitter that his favorite song is "Dont' Give Up" by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.
Participation Prognosis: Pretty decent, unless someone greenlighted The Whole Eleven Yards without telling anyone.
Jennifer Aniston -- "Rachel"
Post-Friends Career Highlight: The Iron Giant and Office Space. The fact that both movies were both released in 1999 doesn't diminish their lingering awesomeness.
Post-Friends Career Lowlight: Derailed, Rumor Has It, Friends With Money, The Break-Up, Marley & Me, Love Happens, The Bounty Hunter.
Prognosis: Aniston's post-Friends career has really been nothing more than periodically reminding us how great she's doing since breaking up with Brad Pitt. She's in.
David Schwimmer -- "Ross"
Post-Friends Career Highlight: Recurring role as hypochondriac giraffe Melman in the Madagascar franchise.
Post-Friends Career Lowlight: Directing two episodes of Friends spin-off Joey.
Prognosis: Schwimmer hasn't had a decent role since Capt. Sobel on Band of Brothers, and even then we were denied the satisfaction of seeing him blown apart on Omaha Beach. In.
Lisa Kudrow -- "Phoebe"
Post-Friends Career Highlight: ???
Post-Friends Career Lowlight: Supporting role in Powder Blue, AKA "That Movie Where Jessica Biel Gets Naked."
Prognosis: You know what would go down really well right about now? An updated "crunk" version of "Smelly Cat."
Matt LeBlanc -- "Joey"
Post-Friends Career Highlight: Joey
Post-Friends Career Lowlight: Joey
Prognosis: Seriously, the guy hasn't done anything else since Friends ended, and Joey lasted two seasons. He needs this.
Looks like everybody's available. Let's do this. How else can we get closure on whether or not Ross and Rachel (and Chandler and Monica) are still together? Are the chick and/or duck and/or monkey still alive? And for god's sake, did anybody think to sublet that apartment?
