Horror -- it can be yours for free
Hollywood, believe it or not, is absolutely eager to bring back the classic horror film. Movies like Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula -- they're all in the pipeline, which of course doesn't guarantee anything.

But much depended on Wolfman.

Not-so-fresh off Hidalgo (You remember it, right? Something about horses) and Jurassic Park III (in 2-D!!!), director Joe Johnston was at the helm.

Benicio del Toro took the role that had forever been ingrained in moviegoers' minds by Lon Chaney, Jr. (in The Wolfman) and Maurice LaMarche (in Alvin & the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman.)

The class provided in the original by Claude Rains came about this time via Anthony Hopkins.
Audiences yawned, pretty much. There was some good atmosphere, but things never really gelled and -- as always, and will no doubt be true of any future classic-horror remakes -- the crutch of CGI is too easily available for directors bereft of ideas.

But hey, some people liked it. And if one of them was you, e-mail hairballscontest@houstonpress.com with "Wolfman" in the header by Friday. We'll draw three winners.

And if the movies in the pipeline do better, it won't be too long until we see this remade:
