Sherri Davis, Fighting Teacher, Apologizes; Her Attorney Blames The School

Categories: Courts, Education

The teacher caught on video beating a child apologized today, but her attorney indicated that the blame lies not with her but the school.

Sherri Davis, whose fight with a student has gone viral on the web, had a press conference in the office of her attorney, Chip Lewis (the same guy who defended Robert Durst).

"I apologize for the pain that the result of this situation has brought us to," she said (raw video from KTRK; we weren't on Lewis' media-notification list, apparently). "I apologize for this particular incident and I am very regretful and sorry that this incident has ever occurred."

Lewis said details of the incident couldn't be discussed because of the ongoing investigation what happened at Jamie's House Charter School.

He did say this: "There is a lot more to the story, there is a lot more to what was going on at that school....There's a fundamental lack of security and support and staffing for the teachers to provide a safe environment for these kids to learn in....I frankly welcome the [victim's family's] lawsuit because that is hopefully going to uncover and address the real impetus of how this incident happened," he said.

The civil suit and investigation will show how "Sherry's paced in a situation where she's not only an educator, she's a bouncer, she's an enforcement officer," he said. He said teachers "are being assaulted out there" at the school.

Lewis did say Davis "let her emotions get the best of her," but said it was the result of the chronic atmosphere at the school.
