Death in an exclusive neighborhood
A domestic dispute that turned into a SWAT situation ended Saturday with a woman dead and the man who allegedly killed her in critical condition from a self-inflicted gun wound.

Police responded to a "panic alarm" call in the 2100 block of Tangley near Rice University.late Saturday afternoon. They "were told by Kenneth McAfee that everything was alright. An off-duty HPD officer working an approved extra job for the Southhampton Patrol also responded to an alarm at the same location and Kenneth McAfee told him it was a false alarm and closed the door," HPD said.

Also in the house was Janet Folyth McAfee; the couple's divorce was due to become final in two weeks, police said.

HPD says their officers tried to contact Janet McAfee, but as they did her husband "threatened to commit suicide and barricaded himself in the residence. The HPD Crisis Intervention Response Team (CIRT), Hostage Negotiation Team, (HNT) and Special Weapons and Tactics team (SWAT) all responded to the scene. At some point during the negotiations, Kenneth McAfee shot himself while inside the residence. SWAT officers then entered the residence and found Mrs. McAfee deceased."

She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, police say.

McAfee was charged with murder and is in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital.
