Amongst Us: A Series On Immigration By Village Voice Media

Our sister paper Phoenix New Times is at Ground Zero in the burgeoning debate over immigration and Arizona's efforts to control it.

Village Voice Media, the chain that owns the Houston Press and publications in other such immigration hotspots as LA, Miami and New York, is beginning an extensive look at the issue.

We'll be examining local authorities like Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who eagerly and rabidly goes after brown-skinned residents in round-ups; we'll be looking at the lack of nerve and courage by national politicians like Barack Obama.

From the introduction:

Village Voice Media, in a national series, is telling the stories of Hispanics amongst us, the struggle they face, the groundswell of anti-immigrant sentiment, and the problems that drive immigrants from south of the border. The project examines the consequences when federal authorities lack a coherent immigration policy.

It's a fascinating, many-sided subject, too dominated by extreme views on both sides. How it shakes out will go a long way towards determining what kind of America we and our kids will live in.
