Unidentified Man, Bayou Body Count No. 87

Seeing as it memorializes a resounding Nazi victory over American forces, Kassarine Pass Street, the site of a South Park double shooting last night, would seem to be oddly named.

In the November 1942 Tunisian desert tank battle, Panzers in Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps trounced a badly-led and poorly-trained American-British armored detachment: the Allies lost 10,000 men and 183 tanks against 2000 men and 20 tanks for the Germans.

Last night's Houston gun battle, which took place inside a house less than a block from the South Loop, was not that epic. Only one unidentified man was killed and another was wounded, but each of them is some mother's son.

Witnesses told cops that two vehicles followed each other down the street and both stopped in front of the house at 6417 Kassarine Pass. Some of the occupants of both cars entered the house. Witnesses reported that gunfire erupted shortly after that, whereupon a number of people fled the scene in a dark colored vehicle.

One of the intruders was dead on the scene and one of the house's occupants was taken to the Tub . Both had been shot multiple times.

The World War II battle led to the rise of General George S. Patton. Perhaps this gun battle will be equally fortuitous for some gangbanger, but we're betting an Academy Award-winning biopic is not in the offing.
