You Think Today's NASA Mission Posters Are Lame?

A while back, there was some general web guffawing over what was perceived as NASA's lame mission posters, which have trended towards spoofing popular movies. (We kinda liked them, actually.)

Now we're getting a glance at how bad things used to be.

On Tuesday -- the 40th anniversary of Apollo 13's famous "problem" -- the auction house of Bonhams New York is having a large space-related sale. Included is the checklist from that Apollo 13 mission, expected to fetch $60,000. Also for sale are some mission posters, like the one above.

Oh, NASA, trying to be "hip" with the "kids" and their "lingo." What 1972 hippie hold-out wasn't dying to "Make the Descartes scene with Apollo 16"?

We're only surprised the poster didn't mention how "far out" the moon was from earth.

Other posters up for auction:

We hope to Christ that quality doesn't "send" them in some awful 23-skidoo-type sense, but rather in the sense that they are being transported -- sent, if you will -- to the moon by quality products.

The fact that the graphics look like a vintage road map you'd get at an old Esso station is beside the point.

The boldness of space travel, symbolized by the lack of capital letters. i'm inspired!

If this poster doesn't motivate you to cheerfully do your job, we don't know what will. In other words, we don't know what will. We guess the beehive-shape of the photos is intended to reference drones happily serving their leader. The fact that mission leader Frank Borman, on top, can only produce some sort of reluctant, face-hurting grimace when told to smile is, we assume, also something that will increase morale.

Also available at the auction: a $40,000 faceplate that was attached to a LEM that landed on the moon. Or, if Russian's more your style and you have a spare $3,500, you can get a "Flown Fork & Can Opener From Vostok 2."
