Police are scrambling to find out who fired the shots that killed a Texas Southern University student at a party over the weekend.

Joshua McMackle, an 18-year-old freshman, was gunned down early Saturday morning at a large street party held along the 3700 block of Wheeler, one block west of the University of Houston campus and about five blocks east of TSU.

The crowded party began Friday night following TSU's annual Spring Fest and lasted into the wee hours Saturday when someone started shooting. Police say that McMackle was amongst the hundreds of partiers when he was struck with a bullet to the back.

McMackle ran down the street after being shot but collapsed in a nearby yard. Police say he was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he died.

Police are still piecing together clues but say the gunman got into a fight that spilled out into the middle of the street just before he began blasting away. At least 10 shots were reportedly fired.

Another man was also shot, wounded in the ankle, but he was treated and released by the hospital.

McMackle, who reportedly graduated last year from a military prep school in Virginia, chose TSU for a special music program that the school offers to gifted students.TSU has claimed that the party was not sponsored by the university.

Investigators have not yet said whether McMackle was randomly shot or if they believe the unknown shooter specifically targeted the freshman.

Anyone with information about this case can call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
