Bad News For The Jim Carrey Movie Based On Houston Press Articles

Bad news for former Houston Press reporter Steve McVicker, whose articles for us were turned into a book which turned into a Jim Carrey/Ewan MacGregor movie: The Los Angeles Times is reporting that release of I Love You, Phillip Morris has been delayed indefinitely.

Consolidated Pictures Group, the start-up that was poised to release the Sundance title, has postponed the release once again. And this time it's indefinite.

The movie, which premiered at Sundance in 2009 and eventually played the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes, was originally set to be released March 26. But about a month before that date, the company delayed the release date to April 30, when it was supposed to begin a limited run before expanding several weeks later.

Now a spokeswoman for the film confirms that the movie has been delayed again and in fact won't be coming out at the end of the month. She adds that there is no release date scheduled at this time.
That doesn't sound good. In fact it sounds direct-to-video bad. The Times said the film had received "mixed reviews" at Sundance (McVicker wrote about the experience for us here), but the film was picked up for distribution by the company that handled Bottle Shock.

Maybe the world wasn't ready to see Jim Carrey and Ewan MacGregor kissing each other? We hope not.

We're trying to get with McVicker for some reaction; we'll update when we hear from him.

Update: And we have! he says he hasn't completely lost hope. "The told me August, so I will remain optimistic," he says. "I just hope it comes out before I'm eligible for Social Security."

He notes that the distributor also handled No Country for Old Men. "Maybe instead of No Country for Old Men, it's No Country for Gay Men," he said. "I hope not."

Another update: Maybe McVicker's right! At least Variety thinks so.
