All Norberto Antunes wanted was to steal a car. Then, when the cops showed up, all he desired was to get away.

But Antunes didn't get anything on his wish list. Instead, police say, he is being charged with murder.

Investigators say that Antunes, 23, was apparently trying to pilfer a car a little before 1 a.m. on Sunday in southwest Houston near Bellaire and the Southwest Freeway when suddenly the police arrived. The next thing officers saw was Antunes speeding away in his white Cadillac Escalade.

Antunes raced down Bellaire trying to get away, police say, when he slammed into a silver Toyota Tundra that was at the intersection of Bellaire and Larkwood. As Antunes' car skid across a grassy median into oncoming traffic, a passenger in the Tundra was thrown from the pickup and died. The victim's name has not been released.

Antunes was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police say, and will be booked into the Harris County jail once he has recovered.

This is not the first time Antues has been in trouble with the law. Court records show that he has pleaded guilty to crimes several times in the past five years, including a deadly conduct charge for pulling a gun on someone.
