Police arrested eight suspected robbers and shot one dead during a stake-out gone horribly wrong.

It all started at about 4:30 a.m. on Saturday when HPD officers in the robbery and tactical operations divisions set up surveillance on a building at 1200 Oak Meadows, a little west of Pasadena. They were responding to a tip that a group of guys were planning to rob the place.

As officers watched the building, suddenly it appeared as though the tipster was right, as five men walked across a nearby vacant field. Police say they were all carrying guns.

Two officers, SJ Hamala and AR Pisaro, were near the field. When the suspected robbers walked toward the cops, they must have seen them, because police say four of the men ran away.

One of the suspects robbers, however, apparently did not.

Police say that 28-year-old Rosalio Ledesma instead started towards the two officers, pointing his gun right at them. Fearing for their lives, Hamala and Pisaro starting firing, police say, hitting Ledesma several times. He died on the spot.

Meanwhile, police gave chase to the four fugitives, eventually catching up with them and slapping on the cuffs. Police also arrested four more people who are suspected of helping to plan the alleged robbery. All eight suspects are charged with engaging in organized crime, police say.

As with any officer-involved shooting, the DA and HPD Internal Affairs Division will investigate.
