FotoFest 2010: "David A. Brown: Trying To Find My Way ..."

Categories: Art

Photographer David A. Brown has a different way of looking at things. A few months ago, he had an exhibit of photos he'd taken with his camera phone. This month, he's got an exhibit of new work in FotoFest 2010, "Trying to find my way ..." which is made up of photos that show reflections in store windows.

The inside and the outside images meld together until they are almost indistinguishable -- a car seems to be sitting inside a convenience store, clouds float over a furniture display in a second-hand shop, for example. That illusion is furthered by that fact that the photos are printed in such a way as to have an almost 3D effect. As the viewer walks in front of the image, different things come in and out of view (a street sign, for example, seems to keep moving further behind a tree).

Hair Balls visited Brown as he was putting the finishing touches on "Trying to find my way ..." and he gave us some insight as to what prompted the project and response to the final photographs.

Enjoy an opening reception with the artist 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 13. Regular Viewing hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. Through May 1. Darke Gallery, 5321 Feagan. For information, call 713-542-3802 or visit www.darkegallery.com. Free.
