Galveston's Tremont House Survives Ike, Only To Be Flooded By Allegedly Drunk Guests

Can the Tremont House catch a break?

The charming hotel down on Galveston's Strand made it though Ike, if not unscathed at least with its head held high.

But its flooding problems weren't over. An allegedly drunk and disorderly customer at the bar decided to provide a little storm surge of his own, according to the Galveston County Daily News:

A historic downtown hotel sustained at least $100,000 in water damage, some to "irreplaceable items," when a guest ripped a water pipe out of a wall, police allege.

Lyle Robin, 22, of Porter, was charged with resisting arrest in connection with an incident about 11:50 p.m. Saturday at The Tremont House, 2300 Ship's Mechanic Row, Galveston police Capt. Jeff Heyse said.

Robin, who was in Galveston to attend a wedding, and two friends were told to leave the hotel bar after being accused of being intoxicated and disruptive, Heyse said.
What the hell is it with Galveston and weddings?

Robin was not charged with public intoxication, according to a statement by Galveston police, but he will be hit with a charge once they determine the extent of the damage.

The Daily News added this little detail:

When police arrived at the hotel, staff pointed to a suspect, who appeared to an officer to be highly intoxicated, [GPD captain Jeff] Heyse said.

Robin had to be carried out of the hotel after refusing to walk, Heyse said.

"Refusing to walk"? That'll endear you to the cops every time.

Update: A statement from The Tremont House --

As reported by the Galveston Police Department, there was an unfortunate incident on Saturday at The Tremont House which resulted in some slight damage to the hotel. Although the hotel still has two guest rooms out of service, the general operation of the hotel has not been disrupted.

The hotel is currently determining the final cost of damages but estimates are approximately $25K, significantly lower than initial estimates. The hotel is operating as usual and is taking reservations for the upcoming Mardi Gras celebration including its 26th Annual Mardi Gras Ball scheduled on Saturday, Feb. 13.
