Real Texans Hate The Longhorns

It's an exciting time to be a Longhorn fan. If UT beats Alabama Thursday, it will mark only the second time in the team's storied history that they will be crowned college football champions while having black players on their roster.

All of Texas is thrilled with the title chase, with the possible exception of 80 percent of the state's population. To be sure, those unwashed masses simply haven't learned the joys of arrogantly watching their team survive a cupcake schedule, in a charmless stadium that has a Jumbotron almost as classy as Jerry Jones'.

Here's who's not rooting for UT on Thursday:

1. UH fans. We can understand the Longhorns ducking the Coogs in football -- it's difficult to make space on the schedule when you've got great traditional rivals like East Navasota County Community College you need to play. But why does UT duck the Coogs in basketball? Tom Penders has done everything but offer to blow Rick Barnes at center court at Hofheinz to get a game, and still the Horns refuse to accept the challenge. And Tom Penders probably gives a damn good blow job, for all we know.

2. Fans made uncomfortable by vaguely homoerotic teammates. We're not saying these fans are as open-minded as they should be -- "Not that there's anything wrong with that," and all -- but if they have to hear one more time about how Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley are roommates, while being subjected to the emo/Bread easy-listening guitar stylings of Shipley, there's gonna be trouble.

3. Fans of good coaching. Texas high school football is just about the best in the country. Mack Brown has the state locked up, recruiting-wise: He gets the pick of the cream of the crop. And UT certainly has a casual attitude toward "young men making mistakes" (i.e., arrests), not to mention academic standards (i.e., six-point Wonderlic scores). Urban Meyer has the same set-up in Florida, and he's had more success in his brief stint there than Brown has had in his long UT career.

4. A&M fans. We don't profess to understand their mindset, such as it is, but we do know they won't be rooting for the teasippers.

5. Fans who hate shitty conferences. The Big 12? Okay, it's got UT, and where would the Holiday Bowl ever be without UT? Oklahoma is good. And then.....Tech? Gimmicky. A&M? Not good in years? Any team in the Big 12 North? Not impressive. But by running this fearsome gauntlet each season -- along with a ferocious out-of-conference schedule of giant-killers who no one's heard of -- the Horns get to the BCS title game. Half the SEC should be pissed.

But other than those 80 percent of Texas' population, everyone will be pulling hard for the Horns come Thursday.  Hook `em, or whatever it is you people do.

Perhaps you missed the fact that Nebraska has one of the three defenses in the country...

Have you noticed that every team in the SEC other than the Big 2 seems to be 7-5?

What about Okie State? What about Nebraska? Nebraska will likely finish in the top 13-15 teams in the country...

OU is one of the best programs in the country on an annual basis. The Big 12 conference can hang with any conference out there...

Perhaps you think the PAC-10 and their 2-5 bowl record is indicative of a good conference?

What a douche.

I think the main reason people hate TU is because of their fans. You know people that wear the merchandise but have never done anything to earn it. Otherwise known as the Dallas Cowboy syndrome.

Scott, youre a moron. Cooger high has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with the high school on cullen. That school is a commuter school like a high school, the education is hs like, the lack of a true univ ersity indentity and the hs football stadium are some of the reasons why uh is known as cooger high.

btw, SMU was the first school in the state to play minority players.

Nice try though...i wouldnt expect anyhting less then a cooger high kid.

Cortney says:

To all those who choose to call it Cougar High (and yes, it is spelled like that, not cooger like that prominent UT fan (Rick) spelled it; I guess they didn't teach proper spelling at UT):

Please stop. If you haven't gone to UH then don't pretend to know anything about the level of education received here. Yes, it is a commuter school, but that speaks to the entire city as a commuter city. I commuted 33 miles to school for 13 years (and that was before college) and I know few people who both work and live in a 5 mile radius. UH is trying to change its image as a commuter school because people fail to see the potential in both research opportunities and education opportunities (like being taught by playwright Edward Albee). So don't knock it 'til you have attended this university and experienced the classes.

That being said - UH did EXCELLENT this season with the exception of UTEP (which still blows my mind), they played hard against ECU (but came up short and could have played better), and finally the Air Force Bowl. As a Cougar and as a first hand observer of that game I am the first to say, they did NOT show up to play that game. Where were our boys? Yes, Air Force has an excellent defense and is a running team while we are a passing team, but Case was far too up in his head about interceptions after the last one in the ECU game and our passing offense just fell apart.

There is always next year to prove our worth yet again. You can't dismiss how well we did this year by a few mistakes. It takes time to develop a powerhouse team and that is what Sumlin is capable of doing.

GO COOGS!

Nicely done Courtney!
UofH can't help that they aren't the recipients of annual billions from the permanant university fund! It is unfortunate UTers are unable to admit they prosper greatly from this, at almost every other Texas schools' expense(A&M receives these moneys also)! The funded will always prosper, the less funded struggle. We have our issues and are in a position to become a tier one school in the near future. Anyone familiar with the history of the SWC knows SMU recruited the first african-american football player......UoH (not SWC then) right behind them. You know who wanted no part of that? Just about every other SWC team. UT still has fraternities that chant WHITE WHITE WHITE instead of FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT during a fight song, in recognition of the last all white championship team! I heard it myself and confirmed what I heard. I'm sure they're not alone.
UT is a academic and sports power, no doubt! Putting down "poorer" universities with old school drivel is just a lack of class.......
P.S. My fellow Coogs, please stop calling out UT! You know the responses you will receive!

Rick...you are a moron...get your history right.

On July 11, 1964, Yeoman helped to break the color barrier for major Texas football programs when the University of Houston signed San Antonio’s Warren McVea to a scholarship. The recruitment of McVea was part of an overall move by the University of Houston athletic department in 1964 to integrate their athletic programs. The other prominent black athletes signed by UH that year were basketball players Elvin Hayes and Don Chaney.

SMU was the first SWC school to break the color barrier with the signing of Jerry LeVias in 1966. (Houston was not in the SWC in yet)

UH broke the color barrier for major college sports in the south...don't try and steal our history.

And yes the Cougar High remark came from the Aggies and it was used back then to demean UH for integrating its student population...when you use it, you are simply circling back to a more shameful part of this states history....maybe you don't care of the historical significance; then again, maybe your a biggot.

Taslow says:

To start it off I am not a UT fan, I will be going for UT tonight but most of the time I am not a UT fan. This has to be one of the worst afticles I've ever read and it is not fact based at all. For one, no one can say that UT basketball has tried to duck around UH because they want to play a cupcake schedule. UT has probably had the toughest schedule in NCAA basketball this year. They played North Carolina and Michigan State in the same week. Sorry Cougs but I think they are far better than you. And as far as football they did have an easy non-conference shcedule but to try and compare the CUSA conference schdule and the Big 12 conference schedule, will only make you like an idiot. But based on some of the things you guys are saying, that may be the case. Yes, the Big 12 did have a down year, but CUSA is still no where close to the Big 12. The only reason UH had some upsets this year is because they have a gimicky offense that works once, but after that first win it doesn't work (hence the UTEP loss and the ECU loss). If Houston played in the Big 12 they would be right there with the Iowa States and the Colorado's every year. Houston is known for having crappy fans who like to act like the cool step brother because they know that in the big scheme of things they really don't matter.

"Houston is known for having crappy fans who like to act like the cool step brother because they know that in the big scheme of things they really don't matter."

While the rest of what you wrote reflects poorly whatever educational system you did your book-learnin' in, I feel like this is a gem. What kind of crazy wisdom are you supplying here? Every time I read this my mind clears and I feel at peace with creation.

Taslow says:

Wyatt, I know this will get you all fired up but I graduated with a double major in electrical engineering and business from Oklahoma State University. Yes, UH beat us but you can ask anyone that I work with, I said that UH would beat us when I first saw the shcedule. So any trash talking that you say in accordance to that will not bother me because I had a strong feeling UH would win that game. I'm not sure what you are referring to when you try to down play my education. Other than a few typo's because I am at work so I don't have time to proof read, I don't really see what I said that would reflect poorly on my education. When I was speaking about Houston having crappy fans it was based on my experiences. I have traveled to most Big 12 schools and other than OU I was treated with respect and hospitality. I went to Sawyer Park to watch the UH/OSU game. I simply wore an OSU shirt, kept quite and watched the game. I continuously had people come up to me yelling at me, trying to start fights with me, and just treating me with other forms of general disrespect. Also, while I was there I saw UH fans yelling at UT fans to watch their own game because some of them had turned around and watched our game after there had the Wyoming game in hand. A UT guy actually got in the face of a couple of UH guys and told them to shut up and leave them alone because they were just trying to watch our game. So maybe I went on a bad day and ran into some bad fans but based on my experience, UH has some very crappy fans. Also, its funny how you would see UH shirts everywhere when they were winning. Then they get beat buy UTEP and you don't see them anywhere, just another observation.

It's never been a joke, academically. I've taken classes at both, UH and Texas, and I can guarantee you that most my classes at UH were more intellectually stimulating and much harder than those at Texas. Rankings do not tell the whole story, just like football.

I like how Texas fans feel obligated to put down a non-AQ conference as if they are threatened by what they see as "lower" teams.

This just in: UT loses t-shirt sale. Local Wal-Mart goes out of business.
