Last Call For Art: Festival of Lights and Polish Art

The first weekend of 2010 is plenty busy with exhibit and film closings. First up, you can catch the last bits of Moody Garden's Christmas celebrations including Festival of Lights. On January 2, the festival closes with a Fruit Cake Launch and Christmas Tree Chunk. (Think of it -- you can get all that bah-humbug out of your system with one well-aimed fruit cake.) The festival exhibits include more than 100 light displays of seasonal scenes, each enhanced with music and sound. Related films include the Polar Express in 4D, Disney's A Christmas Carol in IMAX 3D, Lights Before Christmas 3D, Santa's Late! The Ride. Several art exhibits close this weekend including Rudolph Projects ArtScan Gallery's "Evidence," a group show by Miguel Avila, John Hartley, Darra Keeton, Jeffrey Wheller, and Gabriela Trzebinski. Press materials for the show say, "The theory of evidence is a field wrought with dispute. Many of these disputes stem from the limits of human knowing ... There's also Kamila Szczesna: "Time Sensitive" at Redbud Gallery which comes down Sunday. Polish native Kamila Szczesna's work is a series of drawings on layered transparent films, most including short autobiographical notations which she claims anchor her work to a particular moment of her life. 301 East 11th Street. Finally on Monday, Justin Shull: "Field Work" closes at H Gallery. The exhibit, the first show in Houston for the Dallas based photographer and sculptor, features 18 photographs which document his travels across the country as he and his friends plant evergreen trees, plastic trees, and other objects in the landscape creating what they call "natural and synthetic ecologies."
