Larry Cox played three seasons for the Denver Broncos, back when they sucked in the `60s. After that, he was all about the kids -- teaching, coaching and eventually becoming a principal in the La Porte school system; then getting elected to the school board.

As we say, all about the kids. Maybe too much so.

Earlier this month, Cox resigned from the board for "personal reasons." Yesterday he was charged with possessing child pornography, which we guess is a pretty personal reason. That, and the fact that -- according to court documents -- he told cops he was afraid to be around his grandchildren because he feared he couldn't control himself.

All of which, we assume, would have made it somewhat tough to run a re-election campaign.

The school district issued a statement expressing surprise:

The La Porte ISD family was shocked and saddened by news of the charges against former LPISD trustee Larry Cox. The charges are out of character with respect to the Board member that we knew.

On Jan. 6, subsequent to a conversation with Superintendent Lloyd W. Graham, Mr. Cox resigned from his position on the Board for personal reasons. Upon recommendation of Mr. Graham, the Board held a called meeting on Jan. 11 to formally accept Mr. Cox's resignation. The Board appointed former trustee Gene Horn to serve in the Position 4 seat, and Mr. Horn accepted, effectively completing the resignation process as required by law.

At the Jan. 19 regular meeting of the Board, trustees called for a regular election on May 8 for Positions 6 and 7 and a special election for Position 4. The candidate elected to Position 4 will serve the remaining two years of the term.

Mr. Cox worked in LPISD as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal from 1974 to 2002. He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2007 and was re-elected in 2009.
Cox is charged with a third-degree felony.
