Houston's Molly Ivins To Be Portrayed On Stage By Kathleen Turner
The drama is called Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins, so we're guessing Turner will be ramping up the sassy Texas accent and playing down the St. John's/River Oaks background.
Here's what the Philadelphia Theatre Company has to say about its premiere in March:
Turner will star as the "unsinkable" Molly Ivins, the famously bawdy newspaper columnist, political commentator, and bestselling author. A true Texas original, Ivins was a sharp-tongued liberal who skewered the political establishment and the "good ol' boys" with a heaping helping of her unforgettable wit and wisdom. This one-woman play celebrates Ivins' endurance and tenacity even when it seemed like a complacent America wasn't listening. The play is written by the twin-sister team of Margaret and Allison Engel. It's a one-woman play, with Turner "celebrat[ing] the life of one of journalism's most iconic and colorful figures." Turner's a great actress, of course, and has eschewed the Botox-laden path of forever chasing youth, so she bears some resemblance to Ivins at the height of her fame. The PTC said they were shuffling their schedule in order to accomodate Turner, so it doesn't sound like the piece will be touring with her anytime soon if it's successful.
