But this wasn't your typical DWI. For one thing, the arrestee was riding a bicycle. For the other, he got charged not only with public intoxication, but with impersonating a police officer -- all because the thrift-shop jacket he had on bore a patch from a North Texas town's police communications department.
Texas City police, you are harsh.
A TCPD spokesman told the Galveston County Daily News that the word "communications" was so small on the patch that it couldn't really be seen, meaning, we guess, that most people would assume the drunk idiot on the bike was an actual police officer from The Colony, just making his very confused rounds.
"From a distance, a person would never be able to see the word communications," TCPD Sgt. Joe Stanton told the paper. "It looks like a jacket a police officer would wear."
Texas City police e-mailed a photo of the patch to The Colony, and the police chief "said it had been standard issue to police dispatchers and last issued a decade ago."
The Colony chief said the man must have gotten it from a Goodwill or other thrift shop.
Texas City police couldn't be sure, because the guy was too drunk to be interviewed. "He reeked of alcohol," Stanton said the arrest report indicated. "Before [the arresting officer] approached, he could smell the alcohol."
The hapless biker managed to indicate a friend had given him the jacket. Besides the charge of impersonating an (outdated communications) officer, he was hit with public intoxication, which was upgraded to a higher misdemeanor because he'd been arrested for it at least four previous times.
The Galveston County DAs office will review which charges to bring.
