Spec's On Washington Avenue Closes, Vince Ryan Announces

A bad day for Spec's -- a (minor) fire this morning -- and now the closing of the Washington Avenue store.

Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan has just sent out a notice that the Spec's, which has been embroiled over permits and how close it is to a school, is closed.

His release:

Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan announced today that the Spec's Liquors and Spec's Wines, Beers, and Finer Foods stores at 6010 Washington Avenue, Houston, have closed. The company agreed to a cancelation of its permits for this location this morning prior to an Alcoholic Beverage Commission hearing to consider revoking Spec's license and permits.

The County Attorney filed a suit against Spec's in March asking that the licenses and permits issued by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage for these stores be cancelled because the stores are 675 feet of Memorial Elementary School. The City of Houston bans the sale of alcohol within 1,000 feet of a public school. That suit is pending.

Remember the song..they fought the law and the law one.

Let me get this straight. They apply for a permit. City Grants Permit. They build a multi-million dollar store (started only AFTER the city granted the permit). City realizes that they were stupid and shouldn't have granted the permit and force Spec's to close down.

I love this city.

Yeah, I'm curious about the appeal part. How does that work? I'm sure Spec's must have a good TABC consultant and some pretty decent legal power. I would think that they'd be made good on their investment, at least; they proceeded in good faith after all.
And somebody with the city is going to be added to unemployment rolls, one might hope, if the reporting is so black and white.

If the city gave spec's the proper certification, then the city should compensate specs for their mistake. seems only fair to me.

Camp Logan says:

This is another example of a$$ backwards Houston. We wonder why we dont get respect on a national level... well here is why. The school in question, Memorial Elementary, is full of kids that are "bussed in". Nobody in the surrounding neighborhoods sends their kids to this school. Autos RACE (35mph+ in a supposed school zone) up and down Taggart/Rodrigo/Schuler to get their kids to school and back. That being said, they are are mostly driven back and forth. Anyone who did any kind of study would have seen that. The others walk home - right past the decrepits and drug users that live in the apartments next door. They walk right past Bubba's, from which I have seen several patrons too drunk to notice, turn right and head the wrong way down Westcott into oncoming traffic. What is more of a problem? Specs was honestly the best thing to come to the area in quite some time. I am not a drinker, but I did use their store in a pinch for eggs or milk. We have no grocery within 2 miles here, and Specs provided a convenience to my family which is now gone. Thank you City of Houston - you have missed the mark on this one - yet again. Spend your resources patrolling the bars nearby. Get the cops out to watch speeding traffic in school zones and leave local businesses who improve the lives of surrounding residents alone.

Miss X says:

Spec's closed because Vince Ryan is a repressed, joyless individual. Period.

This is insane. That was the best thing about that area.
