Good Lord, Was Tom DeLay Drunk On Hardball?

Sugar Land's Tom DeLay has wormed his way back into the spotlight lately via the announcement he'll be on Dancing With The Stars.

He showed up on Chris Matthews' Hardball the other day, and we've got to ask: Was he drunk? (DeLay, not Matthews.)

Check out the video for yourself.

Sure, he makes the kinds of statements that anyone with a blood-alcohol level of .14 would make -- protesters "dumped" quadriplegics in front of him at town halls; Democrats have demanded that he prove he is an American, we should privatize Medicare -- but that's just typical Tom DeLay nuttiness.

It's the delivery that's intriguing. There's some slurring going on, there's some latent-gay mincing he seems to be enjoying too much as he describes the "pump with high heels" he has to wear on DWTS, and there's the fact that he calls on Obama to make public his "gift certificate."

Not to mention that Matthews's first question, about the birthers, is answered with the dumping-quadriplegic anecdote.

Hey, it probably was five o'clock somewhere, and it's not like DeLay's an elected official anymore, even if he remains a public figure. And a man has to deal somehow with the fact his career has dwindled down to a Dancing With The Stars appearance.

And maybe he was perfectly sober.

But there was one last piece of damning evidence, one that shows DeLay was under the influence of something: He actually made a sensible comment about guns at one point. That's not the Tom DeLay we know.

DeLay allowed to Matthews as to how it was probably not a good idea to let armed protesters into presidential town-hall meetings.

Come on, that had to be the Johnnie Walker Black talking.
