Last Call For Art: Shakespeare, Etiquette & The Big Show

The Houston Shakespeare festival always does a bang-up job with the Bard, and this year's Twelfth Night is no exception. Our Lee Williams raved about the production, saying "the jovial, sexy, wonderfully funny cast guided the audience through plot twists and difficult language toward a charmed ending." And it's Shakespeare, so you know it's classy. The performances are free at Miller Outdoor Theatre; also closing this weekend is their production of Pericles. Check their website for more details.
Also closing this weekend is Main Street Theater's P's and Q's: The ABC's of Manners, with music and lyrics by Trout Fishing in America. Tickets are $20, with students and seniors getting in for $15 -- if they're polite. Check www.mainstreettheater.com for details.
You may not have realized that Roger Miller, the old "England swings like the pendulum do" guy, wrote a musical. But he did, and it garnered decent review on Broadway. Big River is the Huck Finn story, and John Goodman got his start playing Huck's dad in the original production. The Houston Family Arts Center is putting on this production, at the Berry Center in Cypress. Details here.
Every year the Lawndale Art Center puts on The Big Show, where unknown artists enter work in a judged competition. It's free, and a great chance to spot up-and-coming talent before all your friends do. Click here for more info.
