Downtown Friendswood To Repeal Prohibition, Maybe

The city council last night approved an effort to place on the November ballot a referendum on whether restaurants can sell not just wine, not just beer, but even -- hold on to your hats, Friendswood -- mixed-liquor drinks.
That hasn't been allowed since April 1963, and the country has certainly gone to hell in a handbasket since then, so it's about time we reverse this thing.
Local business owners have been pushing for the change, the Galveston County Daily News reports, and of course they only talk about how it will bring fine restaurants and wine bars.
The proposed ordinance will also allow downtown stores -- not just restaurants -- to sell beer and wine. The stores can't sell hard liquor, though, so you're out of luck if you're looking to bring in the weekend with a giant jug of Cheapski Vodka.
Some businesses in Friendswood can sell alcohol, but it's just the areas that the city has annexed since 1963. This would allow downtown businesses to join the carnival.
Friendswood, of course, was founded as a Quaker community. We're sure the founders will completely understand that thou needs a Hooters to keep thine economic development healthy.
