T. Boone Pickens Names A New Holiday
To celebrate the one year anniversary since launching the Pickens Plan, ol' T. Boone himself has declared today, July, 8, "Energy Independence Day."
It nice to know that all it takes is befriending a few powerful congressmen and about $100 million to name your own national "independence" day honoring yourself. (See our take on Pickens' plan).
Pickens made this declaration earlier today on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. alongside influential lawmakers including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senators Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, and Orrin Hatch, a Republican from Utah.
"From here on," Pickens said, "July 8th will be recognized as Energy Independence Day, honoring the dedicated members of the Pickens Plan, our leaders in Washington who are taking action to promote energy reform, and the commitment of millions of Americans to break out addiction to foreign oil."
Pickens was also in Washington today lending his support to the NAT GAS Act, which was just introduced by Menendez and co-sponsored by Reid and Hatch. The act would extend and increase tax credits for natural gas vehicles and refueling, according to a U.S. Senate news release.
In the past year, since launching his Pickens Plan, Pickens claims a long list of accomplishments, including traveling to 35 states, 74 cities and hosting 22 Town Hall Meetings to promote his plan, and building an online support network of nearly 1.6 million people who drafted themselves in to his Pickens New Energy Army. Pickens also claims legislative successes, citing recent incentives that call for the building of a smarter, more efficient energy grid and focusing investment in cleaner, renewable energy through grants, loan guarantees and tax credits.
So rejoice everyone. Today is Energy Independence Day! Compliments of Mr. T. Boone Pickens.
