Last Call For Art: Graffiti, The Body And A Beauty Queen

"Street Tempted" at Aerosol Warfare

There are two arts shows and a play that warrant your attention before they close this weekend. First is "Street Tempted," an art exhibit at Aerosol Warfare by Galveston-based artist Gabriel Prusmack. After starting as a graffiti artist about eight years ago, Prusmack has since moved on to using found objects, stencils, and installations. Paintings in the Aerosol Warfare gallery were made on found material, adhered to the walls and incorporated into larger images Prusmack painted directly on to the gallery's walls. The result is the entire room is one seamless work of art. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays. 2110 Jefferson. The other art exhibit is the Marlene Dumas: "Measuring Your Own Grave" at the Menil Collection. The South African-born artist, who has lived in Amsterdam for the last thirty years, focuses on the human body. From birth to death, Dumas's figures show love, confusion, desire and despair. "Measuring Your Own Grave" is Dumas's first mid-career exhibit ever in the United States and includes some 90 works. Finally, The Beauty Queen of Leenane closes this Saturday. Referring to Beauty Queen playwright Martin McDonagh, who also wrote the gruesomely funny Lieutenant of Inishmore, Houston Press reviewer D.L. Groover wrote, "His plays are infamous for their willful violence, black-as-pitch humor and solid theatrical craftsmanship.
