Crossings by Cruz-Diez

Wondering what is going on with the brightly-painted crosswalks in the Museum District? Wonder no more.

Houston has become the first city in the United States to have a street installation by Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez. The five crosswalks that connect the buildings of the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston's central campus) have been painted in a variety of zebra strip patterns as part of the "North Looks South: Building the Latin American Art Collection" exhibit currently on display at the Caroline Wiess Law Building.

Cruz-Diez didn't do the actual painting; that was Striping Unlimited, supervised by the W.S. Bellows Construction Corporation. The installation is the lead-in to the 2010 retrospective of Cruz-Diez that the MFAH is currently organizing. It will be the first ever large-scale career retrospective of the artist.
