Be Prepared: This Version Of Cabaret Has Some Serious Bling At The Kit Kat Club

Ditching the sometimes darker approach, the upcoming version of Cabaret that Theatre Under the Stars is bringing to Houston delights in what some critics have called "Vegasy" glitter, but director Bill Berry and his design team maintain is far closer to the truth than what's been shown previously.
Actually, they say, despite the upcoming days of horror in Germany, the night clubs of Weimar Berlin actually weren't all that different from nightspots in other major cities of the time. It was a time of changing social mores, and folks wore a different style of clothes to go with it, especially when they were out clubbing on the town.
After reportedly extensive historical research, Berry and team took their lead from pictures like these.
Theater-goers willing to shell out some extra cash for VIP tickets can actually take advantage of "Cabaret table seating" in the orchestra pit. "Each table will seat four and offer wine, fruit and cheese to create an intimate experience," TUTS says.
This national touring version stars Leslie Kritzer as Sally Bowles (Kritzer has also appeared on Broadway in A Catered Affair, Legally Blonde and Hairspray), Leo Ash Evens as the Emcee (Evens recently played Riff in West Side Story at TUTS), and Tyler Hanes as Cliff Bradshaw (Haynes played Larry in the Broadway revival of A Chorus Line).
Cabaret runs June 16-28 at the Hobby Center for Performing Arts. Tickets starting at $32 are available by phone at 713-558-8887 or at the TUTS Box Office, 800 Bagby at Walker or on-line at TUTS.com.
