Wordsmyth Theater Company's 2009 Texas Playwrights Reading Series closes out its season for the year with The Good Son by Joe Barnes. The play is centered on family matriarch Violet Barkleys. Her whole family has gathered for her birthday party, including her dead husband and son. As the celebration progresses family secrets, some insignificant and some life-changing, are uncovered. Press materials call it "an unflinching look at how the past shapes the present." Playwright Barnes will be available after the reading for a discussion with the audience. 7 p.m. Stages Repertory Theatre, 3201 Allen Parkway. For information, call 281-788-8007 or visit www.wordsmyththeater.org. Free (but donations are accepted)
