Want to give away free food to hungry kids? The city of Houston wants to help you.

City officials are actively seeking non-profit organizations or other community groups who want to sign up to provide free lunches for the economically disadvantaged this summer.

"Every day throughout the summer, 448,753 Houston-area children are eligible to receive a FREE meal, according to the Texas Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Division, yet approximately 83.73% of these children will go without," says the announcement from the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.

So they're looking for groups to register to be part of the Summer Food Service program, which provides lunches and snacks to kids aged one to 18.
Eligible groups can include churches, apartment complexes, learning centers, schools, and non-profit groups.

It sounds pretty easy: "Nutritious packed lunches and snacks are prepared and delivered daily to each site. No billing or food preparation is required. Free staff training and manuals will be coordinated through HPARD," the announcement says.

You've got until April 17 to sign up. Go to www.houstonparks.org for more info.
