Enough With The Rain Already (Updated 11 am)

Messy, messy morning, as you probably have realized.

The west side of town got pummeled with up to a foot of rain; some homes have flooded.

Commuting is a nightmare: Frontage roads are flooded, people are going the wrong way down streets to escape. We hear that getting in from Fort Bend on 90A is especially rough.

Remember, Transtar is your friend. Check it before you go. (Getting in from Westbury on 610 and 59 seemed relatively OK, for what it's worth.)

Schools on the west and north sides of town have been closed, even though its a TAKS day and you generally don't mess with TAKS day. The Fort Bend, Cy-Fair, Katy, Alief and Spring Branch districts have all shut down for the day.

Here's a list of HISD schools that are closed or opening late; the district is not administering TAKS tests today. Here's the Chronicle's list of private schools that are delaying their openings.

The Harris County Office of Emergency Management is asking people in flooded homes to stay there and call 713-881-3100 to report the flooding.

The Red Cross has opened two three shelters:

1. Copperfield Church, 8350 Hwy. 6 North, Houston, TX 77095 at 10 a.m. -- 540 capacity.
2. Bear Creek United Methodist Church, 16000 Rippling Water, Houston, TX 77084 at 11 a.m. -- 300 capacity.
3. Christian Life Center of Christ, 6363 Research Forest Dr., Spring, TX 77381  at 11:30 a.m -- 100 capacity

It's supposed to be getting drier today, although there's still a chance of rain. So take it easy out there, people.
