Local Gays Marching For Obama On Inauguration Day

gay010709.jpgThe gays haven't exactly been pleased by Barack Obama since he chose Christian conservative Rick Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration.

But Obama's inauguration parade will be the first to have an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender group -- the Lesbian and Gay Band Association -- marching in the parade proper. And three Houston Pride Band members will make up part of the 177-person marching group.

Local Kevin Taylor is excited about marching in the parade. He played a previous inaugural event - for Bill Clinton - but then the Lesbian and Gay Band Association wasn't in the parade but on the sidelines. "Clinton gave us the thumbs up," he tells Hair Balls. "It was an emotional experience."

The local participants received the music they'll be performing a couple of weeks ago - planned songs include "A Brand New Day" from The Wiz and Beethoven's Ode to Joy.

As for Obama choosing Warren, Taylor says, "It was disappointing...But I understand that he's wanting to be inclusive and trying to bring the country together, so I guess I give him the benefit of the doubt for that."
