Texas Receives A Gentlemen's C For Its Emergency Rooms

Categories: Texas
er120908.jpgThe bright side of the latest report by the American College of Emergency Physicians is that Texas did not get a failing grade in its efforts to provide emergency-room access and care to residents.

On the other hand, we're not making the Honor Roll or anything.

ACEP gave Texas a C, placing it 29th among the states in terms of ER care.

How do we suck? Let us count the ways.

We have the most uninsured adults and uninsured children. We're among the worst states in having ER access to orthopedists, hand surgeons and -- not to put too fine a point on it -- ER doctors and nurses.

We also get dinged for having no motorcycle-helmet law and being the 5th-highest state when it comes to alcohol-related traffic deaths.

On the other hand, the state has "a healthy medical-liability environment." We're guessing that "a healthy medical-liability environment" might mean one thing to doctors and another thing to victims of medical malpractice, and the lawyers who represent them.
