Art For Galveston's Art's Sake At Lawndale

The Galveston Arts Center, like a lot of places along The Strand, took a pretty big hit from Hurricane Ike.

Four feet of floodwater destroyed artwork, the plumbing and a/c systems, and much of the walls. It'll take close to $850,000 to repair it all and bring modern art back to the island.

It's a situation that calls for The Art Guys.

The Guys will be hosting a "pass the hat" fundraiser tomorrow night at the Lawndale Arts Center.
In addition to refreshments and general Art Guys frivolity, there will be a slideshow "of both good times and bad so that visitors can see for themselves the damage we are dealing with, as well as remember all of the great exhibitions and public programs that we provide," Alexandra Irvine, the Galveston Arts Center executive director, told the Galveston County Daily News.

The Arts Center was certainly one of the neater places on the Strand; if they can raise the cash (about $300,000 has been raised so far), plans are to open by next summer.

The event at Lawndale is free and lasts from 5:30 pm til 7:30 pm.
