Things We Don't Get: Walton & Johnson

Categories: Spaced City
Through no fault of our own, we stumbled once again on the Walton & Johnson radio show on 950 AM this morning. OK, it was our "fault," because we were trying to find something interesting to listen to.

We had forgotten just how bad these guys are. We quickly remembered as we listened, struck dumb by the utter inanity of it all.

The lisping gay guy. The "black-guy voice" talking about how Obama's going to take over all the radio stations.

Right-wing nuts can be funny at times; Rush Limbaugh is an entertaining, if massively wrong, radio personality. Shock jocks can be funny at times; we admit we've laughed occasionally at Howard Stern. So no, it's not that we never laugh at people who oh-so-bravely thumb their nose at "the PC police."

But these guys, and their show, are so aggressively unfunny -- so inimical to the idea that a "joke" is intended to generate a "laugh" -- that we have to wonder: Have they ever been funny?

We're willing to be convinced. We're willing to believe that we just happen to miss every hilarious moment and only happen to tune in to the ones that are dumber than Sarah Palin's geography teacher.

So please...Walton & Johnson fans, send us examples of stuff they've done that you think is funny. Links to podcasts, clips, anything that would show they understand the concept of humor.

If we're wrong, we'll be glad to admit it.

I listen to the W&J show from time to time when I get bored with other morning shows. I also get a laugh every now and then from their "jokes" if you will. I don't take their racial comments seriously either. Of course when I carpool  with coworkers I don't let them listen to it in my car. I hear enough of their sob stories without the show.

My problem with this show, besides being Romney campaign head quarters, is how much disinformation they actually relay as fact. I heard on yesterday's show their explanation of how much it costs to run the White House. Obviously Obama's term is been the most expensive ever. In their opinion of course. Stating that taxpayers pay for their food etc. Over the weekend I was reading a piece by one of the actual chefs working currently in the White House who was quoted as saying "The Obama's purchase their own food." There are way more of these examples of fudging the truth than any actual substance or humor on their program.

These guys are entitled to be as far right as they please. Maybe if the read something besides Animal Farm, they could actually bring facts tot the table.

I doubt it because their audience seems to prefer subtle racism and a total disregard for any actual truth.

They are libertarians and the costs they were referring to is documented in a highly researched book about to be released.

The Walton and Johnson show is genius.... From what I've read on other sites, however, people might be missing the point.  They seek humor in the actions of our own American society. They speak simple truths and show the humor in the logic of both sides of the extreme political spectrum.  Interesting enough, I find myself realizing how extreme today's liberal mind can be in this country and how ridiculous the extreme expectations of liberals on American society to agree with their way of thinking and except it, or to find ourselves ignorant to feel otherwise.  How similar is this mindset to any other dictating party in history, except with the absence of total force?   It's interesting to read the opinions of media about the show or anything close to conservative, and how infiltrated a once neutral tool and resource has become to be more like a mindless puppet.  To use the constitution and manipulate it for their gain, yet to turn a blind eye on the basic principles it was founded on.  It's also funny how -quote- "a Red Neck, humorless show" can cause me to think about such issues while getting ready for work.....at a hospital.... not a lumber yard in the deep south as liberal media seem to be classifying the 10%er listener base.

Most of you guys and gals don't get it. The radio 'Gawds' are radio 'Gawds' for a reason. They dominate in every market they are in. The 'Ten Percenters' refer to the demographic. W&J have a listener volume of ten percent or more of the population in every radio market which their program is broadcast. That's pretty good in radio speak. If you do not like them, change the channel! It is entertainment, and they do it best IMO. Calling for them to be banned on the airwaves is quite close to the regimes of Stain, Hitler, and Mao. Is that who you really are? We have a constitution, and the very first amendment is about free speech. I recommend those who want to shut these guys up, please reflect upon your freedoms, and think again. I am sure you would not want someone to shut you up. Enough said!

I just dont get it. People constantly complain about different radio shows be it w&j or rush. If you dont like it ... change the damn station. Stop wasting your time listening to stuff you dont like and then complain about it. Its sad. W&j have been on since '83 so they must be doing somthing right!

"so aggressively unfunny"; You are so aggressively liberal that you can't stand listening to anyone telling the truth so you bash them instead with your words:  "how bad these guys are", "Right-wing nuts can be funny at times", "massively wrong", "so aggressively unfunny ", "Have they ever been funny?", "anything that would show they understand the concept of humor". If we're wrong, we'll be glad to admit it. This is your biggest lie yet! You will never admit to being wrong on anything!

I have been a fan of Walton and Johnson since they were on Q93 in New Orleans. Unlike the written press, Walton and Johnson wake up their listeners to the harsh realities of what is going around us. They use humor to get their points across. I am not saying I always agree with them on every topic, but they do open my eyes and ears to a different perspective unlike the written press. LONG LIVE the Walton and Johnson show where ever they may be. Also, I don't think it was 'by chance' you found them, I think you got tired of reading your own boring one sided columns.

I listen to these guys in the morning and have laughed at them on a number of occasions. They are pretty much the epitomy of what the rest of the world expects from americans i.e, self righteous, insular, poorly educated etc.etc. Holding them up as a valid source of information is comical.. you have to laugh at that at least.Thankfully they are not bible thumpers, there's more than enough of that hypocritical crap on the tv and raido around Houston.

They are contracted radio hosts or DJ's (whatever they are called today) with self-interest in mind. Who cares if they focus on the presidental race. Its their show to run how they please. If you don't like it then change it. I guarantee they are more popular than your show. hahahaha. I've never even heard of you before.

I agree totally....as one who has listened to these guys since 1983(they were much less political back then) they are rarely if ever actually funny. I personally believe they are acutely aware of playing to a right wing crowd much like FOX or other similar acts. I found it amusing that their radio program is even called a "show" as there is not much of anything new.Not only are those voices horrible but they actually expect listeners to take political advice from them. If I wanted to take political advice from the same people who tell me which titty bar I should go to, I'd go to a titty bar!!  I pay taxes and work everyday of life and rarely agree with their philosophy on anything. So I would be a communist or socialist by their definition. If you don't agree with their myopic opinions you are not an American. Their show is subtly racist while accusing everyone non white of being terminally racists. They are unabashedly working for an oligarchy and convincing uneducated right wingers that this form of governance is in America's best interest. it would be laughable if it weren't so incidious.

Wow! I can't believe so many people are incapable of having a discussion about a radio talk show without resorting to petty name calling.  So sad.

I'm extremely moderate and listened to W&J for years before I moved to a city that didn't carry them.  I was so excited when I moved back to Houston because I got to hear them again.  I was so dissapointed with what the show had come to.  It used to be so funny and sarcastic.  It wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't caught them in out right lies lately.  I've talked to co-workers and they have stopped listening for the same reason.  Just this morning I heard them talking about how Obama hates Texas and won't declare a state of emergency because of the wildfires.  Obama declared Texas in a state of emergency because of the wildfires back in the beggining of July.  I mean really, what kind of rational person would think the President would hate an entire state?  I know they could be a show worth listening to if they would just reel it in a bit.

Wow...two years later and those guys still aren't funny. I haven't, don't, and don't plan to listen to them. A friend of mine heard their show Monday. It was incredibly offensive. While stating their opinion on Stephen Hawking, they decided to go a step further and bash people with disabilities. They used terms like robot, piece of meat, corpse, blob...and then had the nerve to say they had to clean up the mess that the zombies made because the ALS Society decided to state their opinions. They've blocked us from posting on their Facebook page, they deleted all the comments that were made before they blocked us... I've made comments on the blog page of their website but they haven't posted them yet. I sent them emails but no response. Sad but true...the 'Radio Gawds' aren't Gods at all, they are cowards. Oh...and they haven't posted the show archive for that day either....

I couldn't agree with you more!!!  After their broadcast on Monday May 16, 2011 where they called Stephen Hawking "a piece of mean" "corpse" and many more horrible names because he suffers from ALS which distroys all your muscles leaving you with nothing more then eye movement and your brain totally in tact.  I lost both my husband and son to ALS and I do not find any humor in anything about it. Our ALS facebook friends and family put posts on their site and they took them all off saying they had to clean up the mess the "zombies" made. These men are less then the lowest form of humanity.... Great call on your part thank you very much, Cyndi Church

I agree they danced on the edge of heartlessness towards the disabled, but if you listen closely again, they attacked stephen hawking and the atheist scientific community specifically in response to them calling all religions a childs fantasy. Als or disabled people were not mentioned. They should have and could have made the distinction much clearer, but the next line praised karma for screwing over a man who was screwing over people who rely on public support to find cures for their disabilities and diseases.Again, the language used was on the edge of bigotry and what not, but if you have the ability to think deeply, you can figure out who they were "attacking".As a 10%er, I get that and as a very well educated libertarian who believes in equality and truth in both reawrd and punishment I have found that the people who are running this country's, nay worlds' potential into the ground are the ones, conservative zombie or socialist lemming or not, who dont think before they speak and are so blinded by their own biased opinions that they cant hear past the first sentence of anything politically or socially charged. Show me the fear mongering in their show. They taut the ideas of a free republic when they wax political. If that is an oligarchy, sign me up every time. At least its not what we have now, a dictatorship of those smart enough to keep you in fear of your own self sufficiency, or lack thereof.W& J are great. They are comedy foremost and it should be taken in context of that format. You libertarian haters voting to bail out the banks and car companies with my money is what pisses me off far more than their occassional lack of tact.

I find it utterly hilarious that everyone seems to find problems with Walton & Johnson because they bash Liberals and their beliefs, yet seem to completely disregard their blatant disgust with the Republican party. If you actually listened to the show, you would find that they are, in fact Libertarian, as stated earlier, and frequently criticize former presidents G.W. Bush and Nixon, among others - both Republicans, if you were unaware. Yet I haven't seen one person on here complain about their daily Republic/Conservative bashing - case in point, it's obviously close-minded Liberalism that prevents you from finding the hilarity in their daily banter.

On another note, I noticed how a lot of you who are opposed to the show mention that W&J are "fear mongers." I'm willing to bet the majority of you supported one of the biggest fear-mongering money-making schemes of the past decade - Al Gore's Global Warming scam (or, as it has evolved with "new scientific evidence," Global Climate Change). Wake up people, Walton & Johnson aren't the fear mongers you should be afraid of, they make no money off of it, unlike your cap-and-trade buddies at Capitol Hill...

This is so obviously "seminar bashing" by you haters of W & J. What sort of idiot listens to something they don't like? Is that a different type than the sort who collects a series of cliches to make a point? If W & J were no good they would not last. It's not what YOU like, it's what the ratings report says. It's same reason Air America is (virtually) gone, and NPR can't survive without MY money.-Hate Rush? I bet you do, but you don't ever listen to him. If you had a funny liberal you would go there. dokb13

i have been listening to Walton and Johnson religiously every morning for the past 10 yearsI am a true 10%er I love the sarcasm they bring out and love the punch lines they throw in. It is interesting to see how the W&J haters are obviously liberal, and because of the politically correct blinders they insist on wearing block out all common sense they find no humor in the unfortunate truth about their socialist tyrant of a hero "president" being commented on in a light hearted way. In todays sad economic/politcal climate, when the core family values that the true majority hold dear are on attack from the liberals and villanized by the media, it is relieving to have some comic relief via two talented men. They speak the language of the people. Thank you Walton and Johnson.

I think that they are funny at times, although I dont agree completely with their political views. The only thing I dont like is that they are constantly talking about the President and putting down Muslims. I am a modern Muslim from the states. I think America is the greatest country in the world. I feel that they make us all seem like deranged, anti-American, psychopaths. I dont think its fair to blame everyone for the actions of a few people. They are completely disobeying Islamic practices. Anyway, thought Id throw that out there.

W & J are alright for a laugh, if you want unbiased news listen to an overseas station. You are not likely to find it on your dial here.

As for their content they are the Jerry Springer's of radio. They do what they need to, to keep up the ratings.

It's entertainment guys not facts, you are not doing yourselves any justice by thinking it is.

I listen to them for fun and so should you.

If you think they speak the truth you are a sheep.

Good luck to everyone,

Human behavior is very interesting. A few people here with very clear right wing tendencies adore these talk-show guys and the ones with the clear left-wing tendencies hate them. As someone in the center, I just have to say that I do not find them funny at all. I gave them a listen a couple of times in the past and frankly, I haven't been back in a very long time nor do I intend to.Everyone has the right to free speech, even these two paranoid and talentless individuals. Obviously there are many paranoid and talentless individuals who keep them on the air. Personally I prefer The Buzz in the morning or my trusty MP3 player to get me through traffic.

W.T.F. The guys are funny. Richard sounds like a guy with his head up his ***; because he is obviously in the dark about the state of this country and the reality of the rest of the world. I have been most place in this world and still find this the best place to live; however, I get concerned when there is a conserted effort to make us like the rest of this world. Remember most folks are here because they wanted some place different with freedoms denied elswere. We are on the verge of natonal bankruptcy & of lossing a number of the freedoms provided by our Constitution. These guys point that out (as sad as it is) in a humors way. Awww, did the wittle guy get offended? Hear something you didn't like wittle guy??

When you are at the mall no one tells you what to buy. You move along if you see something you don't like. So just keep on a moving the dial on your radio. I dont think you have an article about how unfunny a liberal guy who has no sense of humor. Even if he is trying to be funny he can't.

The show doesn't claim to be conservative but Libertarian. If you are unsure to the party platforms look them up, they are pretty simple and very fair.

Besides your desire to have your own show for over 20 years is there anything else you are jealous of. I mean what are you in this world? An internet blogger from houston? Wow, you have merit richard. You must really think about a lot.

Obviously you were provoked enough to write an article. Next time do us all a favor and keep your biased opinions to yourself. No one will miss it because the very same mindframe you have is nothing unique.

Im pretty sure there is a strong correlation between folks who share political views with W&J and the folks who find their show funny.

In this "Politically Correct" country their opinions are very unpopular with the vocal segment of our society, but they consistently speak their minds. That makes the show entertaining. Phone scams and "Rock star" interviews are not my thing. The current state of affairs in this country is upsetting. That is what the W&J show tries to tackle.

Funny is Funny. I don't agree with the political views of Jon Stewert of "Daily Show" but the guy is extremely funny. Bill Mahr is not.

Just my opinion.

Andrew

Walton and Johnson are definitely a unique shift away from mainstream radio. I might not agree with all their political views but they are humorous.

To say "Have they ever been funny?" really hurts your credibility in writing this article.

Just take a look at their website to see the humor. http://www.waltonandjohnson.co...
