A Different Kind Of Traffic Problem For Houston

Categories: Crime
Harris County, be proud -- you're a leader in...well, in human trafficking. Maybe you shouldn't be so proud, on second thought.

Texas AG Greg Abbott released a lengthy report today on human trafficking in Texas, and the news isn't too good. Up to 17,500 people are brought into the US as victims of human trafficking, and one in five of them comes through Texas.

“Sadly, human trafficking victims are coerced into modern day slave labor and forced prostitution rings," Abbott said in releasing the study. "The State of Texas must continue to focus on preventing human trafficking and protecting its victims.”

There's a ton of recommendations in the report, stuff like creating a civil racketeering statute to get the guys behind the scenes. It's worth reading, and the lege will begin conducting hearings on it later today.

It also offers praise for a study done by the UH Graduate School of Social Work, so maybe the news isn't all bad for us locals.

But we should have known, if there's a problem with traffic, Houston will be in the forefront.
