Kaboom Books is one Houston’s best kept secrets, unfortunately. The used bookstore run by Post-Katrina/New Orleans transplants Dee and John Dillman features a wealth of already-been-read fiction and 80+ other genre selections.

The pair has had a couple of shops around the Heights area – with the longest-standing store at 3116 Houston Ave. Next week, they’ll open up a second location at 729 Studewood next to Antidote Coffee. But they’re leaving out the “P.” (It even says so on the sign: Kaboom Books (Less P).”

“We do not have, in mainstream fiction, any author whose last name begins with P,” John Dillman tells Hair Balls. The literature lover says it’s an ode French novelist George Perec whose book A Void did not contain the letter “E.”

“So to honor that I’m taking out all the P's,” John Dillman says. Readers can find plenty of P's at the main location.

We’re in favor of quirky shops like this landing in Houston and with Antidote already becoming a hipster-hot-coffee spot, Kaboom is an excellent neighbor. Dillman has been in the book business for 35 years and even builds all the shelving for his stores. He is currently designing a bookshelf-man to be displayed at the Studewood location.

But an independent bookstore? In these times? Well, John Dillman tells us, this actually a good time for used bookstore owners.

“In difficult financial times, economic times, used books make out better then you would think,” he says citing penny pinching and the cheaper price of used books.

Kaboom Books will be open for business next week – once all the permits are squared away.
