Hey Ike, Thanks for All the Debris

Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 10:49:28 AM
Looks Hurricane Ike has surpassed Alicia in terms of crap piled up on the side of the road.

“As of Sunday, October 5, 2008, we have hauled away nearly three million cubic yards (over 76,000 truck loads) of debris. This is about the same amount that was hauled away during Alicia,” said Harry J. Hayes, director of the city’s solid waste management department, in a news release.

As anyone who’s left the house over the past couple weeks knows, the job is far from done. The city says it’s only 65 percent complete with the first pass and estimates the grand total of debris is going to be somewhere between 7.5 and 9.2 million cubic yards.

Just how much debris is nine million cubic yards? According to a figure retrieved from this site and our knowledge of seventh-grade math, that’s enough broken limbs and shattered lawn furniture to fill the Astrodome six times. – Keith Plocek
