The Busiest New Airline Route Is In Houston

Categories: Spaced City
Airlines across the plant added almost 2,100 new routes last year.

Which new route was the single most popular? It was right here in Houston.

The new Hobby to Big Spring route drew tens of thousands of travelers, which is especially strange because it uses a one-prop plane.

Actually, the most popular new route was out of Bush and it goes to Heathrow Airport in London.

"I wonder if this is an example of synergy between the sizzling energy sector — Irving,Texas-based Exxon Mobil is right outside Dallas, for instance — and the equally high-flying — until recently — financial industry in London," says Matt Phillips, aviation writer for The Wall Street Jounal.

The Bush-Heathrow flight was the busiest new route in terms of capacity, according to the Official Airline Guide (See Table 4).

With 13,874 passengers, it barely topped a new Seoul-Shanghai route.
