Birds Endagered By Man (And Ike) Going Back To The Wild

Categories: Hurricane Ike
It's freedom day for five rare birds that got blasted by Hurricane Ike.

The Wildlife Rehab and Education Center, which is part of the Houston SPCA, is set to release into the wild five brown pelicans it took into its care after the storm.

The brown pelicans, an endangered species, were found all oiled up, and injured to boot, near Seabrook.

And that's where they're headed later today.

Sharon Schmalz, executive director of the center, will release the birds just north of the Kemah/Seabrook bridge on the Seabrook side.

"In the last few weeks these birds have been undergone extensive rehabilitation," thecenter says, including "self-feeding and exercising in 50 foot flight cages."

We'd quote that old saying about if you love something, set it free but fortunately we've erased it from our minds.
